Diploma in Optometry & Ophthalmic Technology is a 2 years Uniquely designed Diploma programme which covers both primary vision care, testing visual acuity, prescribing spectacles or contact lenses, and screening for basic ocular health and technical and clinical support for eye doctors, handling advanced diagnostic instruments, and assisting in surgical environments.
The course will equip the participant to be an able optometrist who will be a medical care specialist , equipped for diagnosing eye disease/vision issues, prescribing lenses/spectacles, performing therapy, and alluding patients to an Ophthalmologist/relevant Doctor. The course will cover eyes, their structures, vision, visual system, and vision information processing in human beings alongwith technicalities to check any defect in vision, its treatment like prescribing and dispensing spectacles and contact lenses to improve vision.
The curriculum includes the study of the examination, diagnosis and treatment of eyes, especially related to visual, optical symptoms, refractive errors and their correction, using lenses and other optical aids. This programme also covers the study of vision screening (eye testing), diagnosis of visual problems, orthopedics and vision training, optometrist counseling of patients with partial sight, colour blindness and hereditary vision defects, and designing and fitting of spectacles, contact lens and low vision aids
The program is envisaged to develop multipurpose ophthalmic manpower at the paramedical level. The training will enable a student to become a competent person in providing services as an Optician, Optometrist, Refractionist, and Ophthalmic Assistant to the community in urban, semi-urban, and rural settings in private, semi Governmental, and Governmental sectors.
